The inland Capital City of Australia, Canberra is a delightful environment, with a garden feel, and plenty of open spaces. Take advantage of the good weather, green spaces, and fabulous dining in Canberra restaurants. Explore the taste sensations of this illuminating continent in its stunning capital, and enjoy complimenting each dish with sensational Australian wine.

Canberra, built in 1913 as the capital of Australia, is a marvellous sight to behold. It's design and layout was the result of competition between Sydney and Melbourne to be recognised as the capital: And the result was a purpose built city mid way between both of them. Canberra was born on the drawing boards of Chicago architects, Walter and Marion Griffin, who won the state sponsored architecture competition to design the new capital for the country. They favoured the 'garden city' style, and their marvellous work is a delight to its residents and visitors to this day.

Built on the edge of an artificial lake, Canberra was at first just populated by civil servants and their families, and it has taken almost a hundred years to achieve the relaxed, cosmopolitan and friendly atmosphere that Canberra exudes today. It is the most ethnically diverse of all Australian cities, which is not surprising considering the number of Embassies, which are situated in the capital. Naturally this influx of cultures has a remarkably good effect on the cuisine of Canberra, and you can find pretty much any type of world cuisine you fancy!

The feel of the city is very similar to that of Washington, the capital of the United States, with a big, open airy feel, and lots of monumental architecture. The winters in Canberra can be very cold, which is due in part to its high altitude, and it does occasionally snow. The Snowy Mountains lie in close proximity to the city and naturally influence the climate, and atmosphere.

June to August are the coldest months, and you might not be adventurous enough to dine outside in these months. The heat of the summer is tempered by cooling breezes from the mountains, and summer nights can be almost chilly. The atmosphere in Canberra is dry, with it being approximately ninety miles inland: The dryness reduces the chill factor of the winters.

The people of Canberra are some of the highest educated and most cultured people in Australia, and because of that they like to dine out in good restaurants with good company. If a restaurant in Canberra is good, you'll know it by the happy, convivial atmosphere, and lack of available tables!

The city of Canberra has a delightful climate, broken into four seasons that accent seasonal produce available to restaurants in the area. Australia is well known as a great seafood-eating nation, and even though Canberra is landlocked, this love of the fruits of the sea is alive in the city.

Restaurants Canberra has chosen restaurants in Canberra where you will be struck by the fantastically fresh produce that is available, year round. There is an enviable cornucopia of fresh regional produce for creative chefs to explore, and a whole host of unusual meat to try.

This is a very cultured city, with the majority of the population working for government offices, or its services. There are many historic and impressive places to visit such as Parliament House of Australia, the National Museum of Australia, the National Gallery of Australia, the National Portrait Gallery, the National Library of Australia, the Royal Australian Mint, the Australian National Botanic Gardens, Government House, and the Prime Ministers lodge. Many of these nationally important attractions will have their own restaurants serving many traditional and International dishes.

It is important to be aware that most restaurants in Canberra will be closed on Sundays. However there are plenty to choose from, for the rest of the week. The Ginger Room, which is located in Old Parliament House is excellent for fine dining, and has two and three course menus. Rubicon is also highly recommended for its romantic atmosphere, courtyard, and fantastic wine list. Aubergine Restaurant and its sister Courgette Restaurant have a great lunch menu through the week, and are well known for their fine dining. The Promenade Café at the Hyatt Hotel is great for buffets, and high teas.

There is plenty of fusion food at restaurants like The Chairman and Yip, and the Ottoman Cuisine restaurant. International restaurants abound in Canberra: With Chinese such as The Four Rivers Sichuan restaurant, and New Asia restaurant. Thai such as Sukothai. Japanese such as Wagamama. Indian such as Ramas for the hottest curries, and Italian such as Tosolinis, and The Italo-Australian Club.

The pleasant and welcoming atmosphere of Canberra is perfect for relaxed outdoor dining in convivial company, and the many parks and green spaces, as well as the water front of the lake provides a fitting backdrop to a warm evening of fine cuisine. Maestral seafood restaurant is a Mediterranean seafood and steak dining experience, which is frequented by the Australian Prime Minister, John Howard, so it must be good!

Civic, the main shopping centre in Canberra can be quite quiet at night, but you will always find some animation on Bunda Street with its funky restaurants and bars. As you can imagine, being a capital city means that most countries of the world have an embassy located in Canberra. This influx of unique and varied cultures means that Canberra has a very cultured and remarkably large selection of International cuisines to sample.
